Overview
An allergy is an exaggerated reaction of the immune system to otherwise harmless substances, like those from pollen , dust, animals and mould . When your child comes into contact with these allergen sources, their body confuses them with a harmful substance and attacks them by releasing histamine into the body, which causes allergy symptoms.
Whether they’re at home, school, a friend’s house or football practice, it’s impossible for children to completely avoid indoor and outdoor allergens. However, there are ways to help minimise their exposure to common allergy triggers and manage their symptoms so your little one can spend more time playing and less time sneezing.
Tips for keeping your child’s allergies in check
Communicate your child’s allergies
Between going to school, having play dates with friends or spending the night at grandma’s house, there are lots of places your child goes that may seem outside your control. Get everyone who has regular contact with your child involved by talking about your child’s allergies and letting them know what they can do to help.
Wash away allergens
Children may not remember to tell you (or be aware) that they were exposed to allergy triggers – from petting the bunny at school or rolling in the leaves at a friend’s house. To help reduce allergen exposure, have them make it a habit of washing their faces and hands when they come home.
Open up
It’s important to talk openly and warn your child about what may trigger allergies so they know what to look out for and avoid - from dust in classrooms to their best friend's cat.
Keep track of allergy symptoms
Children's allergy symptoms may include runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, watery eyes and itchy throat. Keep track of when your child’s allergies flare up so you can treat them when needed.
Sleep smart
Allergies can affect sleep, cause daytime fatigue and impact school performance. Make sure your child is getting the full rest they need to help them be at their best. Then do the same for yourself!
Be prepared
Be sure to keep allergy medicine for children on hand for whenever and wherever symptoms may strike.

Help give indoor allergies the boot
There are over 150 airborne allergens, including dust mites , pet dander and mould many of which can be found inside homes and schools. Try limiting exposure through vacuuming, wet dusting, and washing linens regularly.
